Fire Safety During Winter Storms

Winter weather is officially upon us and now is a good time to think about fire safety during winter storms. Did you know that half of all home heating fires happen in December, January and February? Knowing what to do in the event of a storm may help save your family and your personal belongings.
- Test all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms in your home at least once a month.
- Plan two ways out of your home and keep your sidewalk and driveway free of ice and snow.
- Make sure your house number is visible from the street so firefighters can locate your home.
- Power can often times go out during high wind or ice storms. Have battery-powered flashlights and extra batteries.
- Keep up to day on winter weather by checking on the radio, television or social media for updates.
- If your heat stops working bundle up with extra layers of clothing and blankets to keep warm.
- Check on your neighbors.
- Turn portable heaters off when you go to bed.
