Structural Cleaning

SERVPRO can provide wet or dry-cleaning services. Additionally, all other restorable contents will be cleaned and deodorized to preloss condition. Deodorization

SERVPRO of Jefferson City provides specialized services that rid your insured’s home or place of business of offensive odors left behind by fire or smoke damage. We do not merely cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; we seek out the sources of the odor and remove them.

WATER DAMAGE

If you have recently become a victim of commercial water damage, you may be wondering what you can do to mitigate your damages. There is a critical period in which certain actions must be taken to preserve as much of your property as possible and to decrease any health risks when water damage has occurred in a commercial space.

Preparing a Space for Water Damage Restoration
Before you enter your commercial space or any flooded building, you will need to make sure the electrical power to the structure is shut off. You should also be aware that during a flooding event, small animals or reptiles tend to seek shelter inside of buildings. Be prepared to deal with the discovery of wild animals in your space.

Protect yourself from entering any flooded building by wearing an organic vapor respirator. You can purchase these at any local paint and building supply stores. You also want to have rubber gloves, protective clothing, and eye protection. The first thing you should do is ventilate the affected areas by opening the windows and placing fans where possible.

Unfortunately, there likely will be items that you need to throw away. Any items that are porous and have absorbed contaminated floodwater cannot be restored. If your commercial space has drywall, mattresses, pillows, box springs, particle board, carpets or carpet pads, these will need to be discarded if they have become saturated. However, there is good news: If you have clothing or household fabrics that can be machine-washed, you may be able to salvage them. Use your washing machine to clean these items with a 10-minute soak at the minimum in hot water with detergent. The soap and normal wash should remove most of the contamination and any staining that is present.

Be aware that your commercial space will need a thorough professional inspection, cleaning and possibly restructuring. Water damaged walls and installations must be removed and repaired, and pockets of saturation should be exposed for drying and sanitizing. Always remember that mold growth could take a few days to appear as it thrives in a moist environment with organic-type materials such as paper or particle board and in temperatures that range between 60 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep good airflow throughout the interior environment, and maintain moderate temperatures to decrease the risk of any mold growth. It is also important that you let your space dry out before any rebuilding occurs.

Summer Commercial Building Maintenance

7/2/2021 (Permalink)

It's important to maintain your commercial business.  Going from the cooler months of spring to the heat of the summer can cause faulty mechanical issues in commercial buildings.  This can affect the efficiency of businesses and often times end up costing you more money than expected to fix.

Keep your commercial business in top condition during summer months with these tips:

1.  Have your HVAC inspected by a professional.  This will ensure the system will be at its top performance level when you  need it most.

2. Conduct a sprinkler system test.  Look for any hidden water problems.  Run sprinkler and irrigation systems early in the season to make sure none of the sprinkler heads are broken.

3. Check for roof storm damage.  Damage can lead to leaks that affect your insulation, building structure and allow for critters to enter into your property. Check for missing or damaged shingles.

4. Inspect the outdoor lighting.  Make sure your property's outdoor lights are working.  Check light's wiring screws, and bases to make sure it is watertight sealed and in good repair.

5.  Conduct routine maintenance of safety equipment.  In hotter months there is an increased chance of fire.  Check your indoor sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, fire safety kits and update your business fire evacuation plan.

SERVPRO of Jefferson City is available for any of  your fire or water disasters and we are available 24/7 at 573-635-5883.

Prepare Your Commercial Building for Winter Weather

1/29/2021 (Permalink)

Are you a business owner?  Are you prepared for winter?  If so, SERVPRO of Jefferson City would like to offer you some winter maintenance tips for your commercial buildings.  Good tips can be valuable in saving you money in the long run.

  1. Winterize your cooling systems

Drain and winterize the cooling tower if not in use.  Also, shut down your chiller or empty the condensate drain tap.  If these matters are not taken care of the result could be extreme damage to your equipment.

  1. Calibrate thermostats

Calibrate your building’s thermostats and lower them to a cooler temperature that is still comfortable for the building occupants.  An easy way to save money and energy.

  1. Inspect your roof

Temperature changes and precipitation can cause problems to building roofs.  Be on the lookout for loose shingles or areas where water could collect, resulting in costly leaks.

  1. Check irrigation systems

Drain your hoses and faucets to prevent broken water lines.

  1. Repair sidewalks

Seal cracks in sidewalks and paved areas.

  1. Plan for snow and ice removal

Be prepared for removal.  If you don’t have the proper equipment, hire a professional who does.  This will benefit in keeping your employees and visitors safe along with prevention of damage to your building.

Does Your Business Have Plan for a Fire Emergency

7/4/2020 (Permalink)

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends all businesses have an emergency action plan to protect yourself, your employees, and your business during an emergency.  They also suggest the following steps when developing such a plan.

Organize an Emergency Preparedness Procedures review with your company's emergency plans. Select an individual or team of individuals to lead and coordinate your emergency plan.

Once a plan is developed, post evacuation procedures, including routes and exits, where they are easily accessible to all empoyees.  Ensure all exits and routes are clearly marked and well lit, wide enough tot accommodate the number of evacuating personnel, and unobstructed and clear of debris at all times.

Conduct office evacuation exercises and drills.  Designate a safe spot outside the facility where employees regroup, recover, and conduct a head count.  Once completed, evaluate how well the plan worked and if additional training or exercises are needed.

Work Place Water Damage

6/3/2020 (Permalink)

It’s not always storms wiping out power lines, or flooding in offices that can close down your business for days at a time. While it is true that commercial water damage is often the result of floods and water that stems from weather events and storms, there are other causes of water damage to commercial buildings.

1. Malfunctioning sprinkler systems
Some older office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems. While such sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement. This could easily damage inventory and business assets.

2. Damaged appliances and equipment
This cause of commercial flood damage is more common in restaurants and catering facilities, as well as any business that has appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance fails and sends water across your building, especially during late hours when no one is around, you may come back to work and face a water emergency.

3. Broken pipes and plumbing
Just like in a residence, if the plumbing system in your workplace fails water damage could be the result.

4. Backed up sewer lines
This is another cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise. Should the sewer line to your building back up or become damaged, realize the potential dangers of contaminated Black Water which can cause health effects and ruin products and office furnishings.

If your business has suffered commercial water damage, SERVPRO of Jefferson City will get you back up and running again. Call us anytime 24/7 at 573-635-5883.

Levels of Commercial Damage

3/20/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Jefferson City handles not only residential damage and restoration, but commercial as well.

There are three levels of commercial damage that are considered:

Level 1

Level 1 is a small commercial loss typically involving 15,000 square feet or less of affected floor space. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a small commercial loss may include, but are not limited to, a stand-alone retail establishment, a small church, a daycare facility, a small shopping center, a small warehouse or manufacturing facility, or a stand-alone administrative building. A Level 1 loss can also be a small portion of a much larger structure.

Level 2

Level 2 is a midsize commercial loss typically involving 15,000 to 60,000 square feet of affected floor space. The building or buildings involved are usually multi-level or greatly divided spaces. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a Level 2 loss may include, but are not limited to, a small multi-family property, a midsize church or school, a small shopping center, a multi-tenant administration facility, or a midsize warehouse or manufacturing facility. A Level 2 loss can also be just a portion of a much larger structure.

Level 3

Level 3 is a large commercial loss typically involving more than 60,000 square feet of affected floor space. The building or buildings involved will likely be large multi-level structures. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a Level 3 loss can include, but are not limited to, a large church, hospital, school, or university; a large multi-family property; a mid- to high-rise retail or administration facility; a large industrial, manufacturing, or warehouse facility; or a large strip-style shopping center or shopping mall. This is the level at which it would be appropriate to refer to the project as a “large loss.”

Once SERVPRO of Jefferson City determines the level of loss, the property is further assessed, and a team of appropriate size is dispatched to get the job done quickly and efficiently, and return your business to operation “Like it never even happened.”®

Flood Insurance May Not Be an Option for Your Business

2/12/2019 (Permalink)

You read that correctly. Flood insurance may not be an option. In some situations, it is a requirement. Financial institutions, investors and others expect you to protect their investments and property. They will not leave the insurance decision in your hands. Sometimes, it’s one of the costs of doing business.  Insurance companies distinguish between water damage and floods. Rising water causes flood damage.

Typical examples are:

  • Overflowing rivers and streams
  • Storm surge on large bodies of water
  • Local Flooding due to heavy rain or blocked storm drains
  • Runoff from melting ice and snow

Weather, plumbing and fire sprinklers are common sources of water damage. A standard commercial insurance policy covers the cost of these repairs. It offers no coverage for floods. The following are situations that may require a business to have insurance.

  1. The Federal Government funded, backed, or insured a business mortgage.

If your business is in a flood zone, the government requires you to have flood insurance. It’s the law. If a flood destroys the business, they want to get paid.

  1. Other mortgage lenders may require the insurance.

Lenders want to protect their investment as well. They may even want the insurance for businesses near flood zones.

  1. Investors may demand insurance.

If there is a flood, the investor’s investment is at risk. It is reasonable for them to expect the protection of their investment.

  1. Certain customers and vendors may require insurance.

A distribution business ships inventory belonging to their customer. Other businesses may hold inventory consigned by a vendor. Both parties may want insurance protection for their inventory.

The Flood Happened and the Damage Is Extensive

That flood insurance sure was a great idea. The water is gone. Now, it’s a race against mold. Contact SERVPRO of Jefferson City at 573-635-5883.  We are fire and  water damage remediation leaders in the Jefferson City, MO area.

3 Reasons Why Commercial Properties Need Fire Sprinkler Systemsms

2/6/2019 (Permalink)

It is common knowledge that most commercial buildings have fire sprinkler systems that work to prevent fire damage. However, many do not realize how important these fixtures are in the case of fire. In fact, mounting evidence shows that this form of fire protection is more effective than many give it credit for.

If you are thinking about investing in new fire sprinkler systems, consider the ways that commercial sprinkler systems can benefit your building in case of fire:

Sprinkler Systems Are Virtually Fault-Free
In a recent study conducted on fires, the researchers discovered that fire sprinkler systems operated during 91% of all reported structure fires large enough to activate the systems. Ultimately, nine times out of 10, the sprinkler systems worked. Typically, the reason sprinkler systems stop working due to a lack of maintenance. This fact drives home the importance of regularly repairing your commercial fire sprinkler systems and replacing them if necessary.

Fire Sprinklers are Capable of Cutting Potential Losses in Half
It’s no secret that fires can result in devastating damage to both the structure of the building and the people that are trapped inside. Another recent study found that when paired with early warning systems, automatic fire sprinklers help to reduce property damage, injuries, and loss of life by over 50%. Those are numbers you just can’t ignore!

Fire Sprinklers Help Save Lives
Perhaps one of the most important things that fire sprinklers do is help to lower the risk of death and injury during devastating structure fires. According to a study from the National Fire Protection Association, there has been no record of more than two lives lost inside of a building with a full sprinkler protection that was well maintained and fully functioning.

As you can see, having a full system sprinkler system is a crucial part of fire protection for commercial buildings. If you already have a sprinkler system in place, make sure your fire alarm inspections are up to date and your fire protection equipment is functioning properly. Fire alarm inspections can mean life or death — make sure your equipment is working when it counts.

To obtain IICRC certification, water remediation companies have to conform to specific criteria. Some of the criteria include:

  1. Provide consumers with accurate data
  2. Conduct business processes with integrity and honesty
  3. Ensure that a trained technician is present for all work assignments
  4. Ensure that a continuing education program is in place
  5. Maintain policies for written complaints
  6. Hold liability insurance
  • Why Choose an IICRC-Certified Company?

There is a wide variety of forms water damage can take. Some of them include flooding, a burst pipe, sump pump overflow, and sewage backup. Irrespective of the cause; however, the end-result is substantive damage. In fact, standing liquid can lead to severe property damage as well as mold infestation. For this reason, it's essential that you attain water damage restoration services from a qualified team of professionals.

Doing a Google search for the key phrase "water damage restoration" will produce over 500,000 results. To narrow your selection, it's a good idea to limit your search to companies that have obtained their certification from the IICRC. Because the IICRC is efficient in establishing reference guides and industry standards regarding water damage restoration and mold removal, companies that have been certified by the organization will likely offer you the excellent, effective services you want.

Jefferson City Church Suffers Water Damage

Water damage at Landmark United Pentecostal Church

You never know when the unexpected is going to happen, and when a water line breaks (of course it’s a given that it’s unexpected) it could range from a small trickle to a full-blown disaster.  SERVPRO of Jefferson City received a phone call from the Landmark United Pentecostal Church, located in Jefferson City, that they had discovered water in their church that had extended to the hallway and numerous rooms.  It’s was important to us to help get this church up and running again.  There are many needs to be met in a church and being displaced for too long a time is certainly something a pastor and his congregation want to avoid.  Our crew was quick to load up and take care of the water removal and drying process.  SERVPRO franchises are trained and understand how to manage the drying process.  We provide our state-of-the art equipment and the latest technology to quickly and thoroughly dry carpet and flooring in order to help prevent secondary water damage.  Disinfecting and deodorizing are important process as well.  We’re glad Landmark United Pentecostal called us.

If you own a commercial business, or a home, please don’t hesitate to give us a call when the unexpected comes your way.  Remember, we’re faster to any size disaster.  SERVPRO of Jefferson City, 573-635-5883.

When you are the one in charge of daily operations of a Salvation Army shelter the last thing you want, especially during bitterly cold winter temperatures, is for your facility to be unavailable to those in need of warmth and shelter.  The Salvation Army of Jefferson City provides shelter at their Center of Hope, a 31-bed shelter for homeless men, women and families with children.  And no matter the temperature, the Salvation Army wants to make sure they are prepared to accept anyone homeless at any time.

After a few route visits with Lt. Christopher White at the Salvation Army administrative office, we discussed the idea of preparing an EMERGENCY READY PROFILE (ERP) to help minimize business interruption in the event of a disaster at their shelter.  He was quickly on board with the idea and a date was scheduled to meet and prepare the comprehensive document containing critical information about his administrative office and shelter, including emergency contact information, shut-off valve locations and priority areas.

Preparation is the key and the SERVPRO Emergency READY Profile will help ensure you and your business are “Ready for whatever happens.””

The ERP is a no-cost assessment that requires a short amount of time.  Call your SERVPRO of Jefferson City, 573-635-5883, to schedule an Emergency READY Profile at your office.

Protect your business from a Fire!

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

As a business owner, examining your risk and taking preventative measures as well as educating your employees on procedures can help reduce the damage to your facility.

Assess the risk that fire hazards may pose to your business. The National Fire Protection Association offers handbooks and other publications on the fire safety code in place for businesses.  You can also call your local Connecticut fire department and ask the fire marshal if they are available to make a visit and identify any risks.

Maintain your sprinkler system.  An  automatic sprinkler system will dramatically reduce the spread of a fire in your business as well as keep your employees and customers safe. Have your system properly maintained and inspected so that it works when you need it!

Check your smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Standard fire safety practices call for smoke detectors and fire extinguishers on every floor. Your best bet is multipurpose extinguishers, which will douse most small fires with ease, without shorting out your electronics.

Educate your employees. Make sure all employees are aware of your fire safety plan by conducting a yearly fire drill and educating new employees.  Training in how to use fire extinguishers should also be conducted.

By following these steps, if your Jefferson City, MO business does experience a fire, the damage to your building should be minimal. SERVPRO of Jefferson City can take care of the water and fire damage that results and get your business back up and running.
