The American Red Cross provides several preventative measures to help reduce the chances of freezing pipes:

  • Drain water from swimming pools and sprinkler supply lines.
  • Remove, drain, and store outdoor hoses of any kind.
  • Insulate exposed water pipes.
  • Open cabinet doors to allow for warmer air to circulate around the pipes in your home and garage.
  • Let cold water drip from the faucet that is served by the exposed pipes to make sure they’re empty.

Water-Saving Tips

Did you know that as much as 20% of a household's water usage is in the kitchen?  We have some quick and easy tips for saving water in the kitchen.

  • Purchase a low flow kitchen faucet.  Today's faucets have a flow rate of 1.5 GPM.  Older faucets, 5 GPM.
  • Use your dishwasher instead of hand washing dishes.  Make certain you have your dishwasher full.
  • Soak pot and pans. You'll use more water scrubbing under running water.
  • Steam or roast your vegetables rather than boiling.
  • Use washable spray mops and spot clean floors rather than mopping the entire floor.
  • Save your running water.  How many of us run tap water while waiting for our water to get hot or cold.  Instead, fill a pitcher of drinking water for the fridge or keep a bucket for watering your plants.
  • Fix leaks.  Fifteen thousand drops of water can make a gallon.  A leaky faucet can waste over 3000 gallons of water a year.

Tips for Keeping your Bathroom Plumbing in Good Shape

Did you know that no other room in a house contains as many pipes and plumbing fixtures as the bathroom?  The toilets, sinks, bathtubs, showers, hot and cold water lines, and drainpipes in any household bathroom handle an immense amount of work. 

Never flush trash into the toilet

It's not a trash can.  Toilet paper should be the only paper being flushed.  Facial tissues are highly absorbent and can easily swell to block the pipes.  And wet-wipes can clump together and turn into a huge and difficult to remove clog - not only for the bathroom plumbing, but in the sewer line and municipal sewer system.  

Protect the drains with drain covers

Basic mesh drain covers in the sink and shower protect the drainpipes from most of the problems leading to clogs.  Clean the covers periodically so they won't cause slow drainage.

Never use chemical drain cleaners on the drains

Store-bought drain cleaners are acidic chemicals and are only temporarily effective.  They can create severe damage to drainpipes, leading to corrosion.  If you can't eliminate a drain clog with a plunger or a hand-cranked drain snake, call for a professional plumber.

Replace Outdated pipes

Also, keep attics well ventilated to maintain temperatures close to the outside, which will minimize the risk of dams forming. 

Ensure pipes do not freeze and burst by keeping the heat in your home at an acceptable level, cover exposed pipes with insulation, sleeves, or wrapping and open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.

Here at SERVPRO we see a lot of damage.  Our crews are out working hard to restore homes from fire, water, mold,  whatver the situation may be.  With the current  winter weather, water damage is on the rise.    We would like to share some information to keep homes safe, and in order to do this, having a plan and knowing what to look for is key.  

Water damage can occur in homes in a variety of ways.  Homeowners should check for leaks throughout their houses, inspect pipes and connections in bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms. Look under and around sinks and around bathtubs for any discolorations. Do not ignore connections to dishwashers or refrigerators with water and ice dispensers. 

It is very important to make sure water is flowing properly down drains. If not, try clearing the drain with a plunger or an over the counter solution (there are also home made solutions you can google)  . If that does not work, call a professional for assistance.  In order to keep drains and pipes clear, follow simple steps such as disposing of cooking oil in a container rather than pouring down the drain,  never flush diapers and other inappropriate items down toilets, and be careful of what you put in your garbage disposal.  Eggs or potato peelings, for example would not be good to put in your disposal.  In addition, backflow valves should be installed in sanitary and storm sewer lines.

Check the floors around water heaters for wet spot.  This could indicate you have a rusted tank or other problem, which you would want to take care of right away before the damage gets worse.  If necessary, have the tank replaced as soon as possible. 

A leak in the roof of your home and clogged gutters or downspouts can also lead to significant water damage inside your home. As soon as you notice a leak in your roof, or even signs of significant wear, have it inspected and repaired immediately.  In addition, keep all gutters and downspouts free of leaves and other debris that could cause back up water to leak into your house.
